It is often remarked that common sense has become uncommon, and many people are increasingly disturbed by the direction we are taking in the living of our lives. Simple has been replaced by complex. Contentment with ‘what is’ has been replaced by ‘always wanting more’. Acceptance of the ordinary has been replaced by desire and demand for the extraordinary. Where once being reasonable was normal, it now seems that being unreasonable is to be accepted.
In Uncommon Sense, John G White goes to the heart of the search for a meaningful life; finding fulfilment and happiness through values and approaches that are positively life-giving for ourselves, our fellow humans, and the life of our planet.
He writes: At some stage in life, most of us reflect on this experience called ‘life’ and ask the big questions: What’s it all about? Who am I? What am I worth? How did the world get in such a mess? What causes hate, wars, oppression and wholesale destruction? What can we do about it? This book is a soulful look at some of the foundations and impacts of these important questions.
He says: Having worked on this quest for the best part of seventy years, I am pleased to say that it’s possible to achieve an experience of being ‘comfortable enough’ with the mystery and wonder of life. I have learned and found the matters addressed in Uncommon Sense to be practical and helpful common wisdom. Of crucial significance is the deep engagement with the spiritual nature of our common humanity, and the inner-connectedness that is the essential predictor of contentment and effectiveness as a human being.
