In a time of growing disengagement with the Christian tradition, reflected in the diminishing numbers of young people in church, one of the challenges facing educators in Catholic schools and elsewhere is how to engage young people in the stories of the gospels.
Godspell: the unauthorised interviews is offered as an innovative way of reminding them (and us) of the central messages of Jesus of Nazareth and how his teachings may become essential for finding meaning in life.
The book is a series of ‘interviews’ with people in the Gospel stories – some known to us; others alluded to – in a creative attempt to bring new life to their stories and experiences. The book reminds us that the characters in the Gospels were real people, with deep expectations about life, and whose encounters with Jesus of Nazareth made often unexpected changes in their own lives, especially about what really mattered in life.
Godspell is offered to Christian educators as an unexpected way of reminding students (and ourselves) of how they could respond with dignity and humanity to how God is calling them to live.
