• Into the Future

‘Now when Jesus had finished saying these words,

the crowds were astounded at his teaching,  for he taught them as

one having authority and not as their scribes.’

Matthew 7:28-29

The gospels present Jesus of Nazareth as calling people to change. His teaching ministry – especially in the parables – encourages his followers to consider new ways of interpreting and understanding the various traditions and teachings they had received; to accept that deep change may be necessary for the coming of God’s kingdom in every age.

The gospels also remind us that many of his followers simply could not accept this new way and ‘walked away’ (see John 6:66); a reminder too that many in the church today are uneasy about leaving behind elements in the tradition that sustained them and their ancestors, sometimes for many centuries.

Into the future explores the necessity of change for the Catholic Church’s well-being and growth, especially in the context of our increasingly secular society. It reflects on how the church in its history has responded to similar changes and calls present-day Catholic disciples to remain faithful to the heart of the gospel message and to witness to that message in ways that are faithful and prayerful, seeking new ways of proclaiming the kingdom of God in our own time.

The book is faith-filled, realistic and encouraging. Above all, it affirms the Holy Spirit’s constant presence in the church – a source of faith and hope in times of change.
