I have come that they might have life... John 10:10
Reflecting on his personal and life experiences as a Christian Brother, retreat facilitator and spiritual director over many years, Living a Balanced Life challenges contemporary approaches to Religious Education in Catholic schools and to spiritual development in all persons.
It especially considers how Religious Education seems to separate religion and spirituality from the ordinary lives of pupils and teachers, suggesting that the focus on doctrine, creeds and catechisms seems contrary to the Jesus/Gospel tradition that teaches us not simply what to believe but how to live each day in order to come to the fullness of our humanity.
It calls for a recovery of balance in how we live; a reminder that spirituality is not simply about Sabbath and Sunday. It encourages us to recover our connection with our cosmos, to renew our understanding of the Jesus tradition about how we live, not simply what we believe; and how our prayer, spiritual and daily experiences complement one another, informing and sustaining us in life’s journey.
Here is an opportunity to reflect on and take up the invitation of Jesus not simply to believe ideas about him but to follow his path, thus becoming fully alive. Living a balanced life.
